Djurgården’s art galleries
About 400 metres (440 yds) south from the Nordiska Muséet is Liljevalchs Konsthall ‹ [map] (Liljevalch Art Gallery; tel: 08-508 313 30; www.liljevalchs.se; Tues–Sun 11am–5pm, Tues & Thur until 8pm, closed Mon), at Djurgårdsvägen 60. It is devoted largely to contemporary work, and the Spring Exhibition attracts many aspiring artists.
About 1.5 km (1 mile) southeast of Liljevalchs (a 15-minute walk, or accessible on tram 7) is what many describe as the most beautiful gallery in the city – Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde › [map] (Prins Eugens väg 6; tel: 08-545 837 00; www.waldemarsudde.se; Tues–Wed, Fri–Sun 11am–5pm, Thur 11am–8pm, closed Mon; guided tours). It is the former home of Prince Eugen, the “Painter Prince” and brother to the late King Gustav V. When he died in 1947, the prince left his lovely home and garden as well as his collection, which includes many of his own impressive landscape paintings, to the nation. This gem of a gallery, looking south over Saltsjön, is not to be missed.
Another 2.5 km (1.5 miles) southeast, on bus 69 or by foot, is Thielska Galleriet (tel: 08-662 58 84; www.thielska-galleriet.se; Tues–Sun noon–5pm, until 8pm Thur), at Sjötullsbacken 6, designed by a popular architect of the time to house the collection of the banker Ernst Thiel. The marvellous range of pictures includes the work of Norwegian Edvard Munch, and Sweden’s Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson and Bruno Liljefors, all part of the National Romantic Movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The gallery even has some pictures by the playwright August Strindberg. In the early decades of the 20th century, Thielska Galleriet became a meeting place for artists, poets, and writers. When Thiel went bankrupt in the 1920s, the city bought the gallery.
Gold in Östermalm
North of Djurgården, the leafy green district of Östermalm commands the highest house prices in Sweden. It’s mainly a wealthy residential area, but one visitor attraction is the Historiska Muséet fi [map] (Museum of National Antiquities; tel: 08-519 556 00; www.historiska.se; Narvavägen 13–17; June–Aug: daily 10am–6pm; Sept–May: Tues–Sun 11am–5pm, Wed until 8pm), dedicated to Sweden’s history from the Stone Age to medieval times. Here you’ll find the world’s largest collection of Viking-Age finds; a chilling exhibition about the Battle of Gotland; and the spectacular Gold Room, an underground vault designed for maximum security for the more than 3,000 prehistoric gold and silver artefacts.
Modern architecture
It’s anyone’s guess what John Tobias Sergel might have thought of the huge illuminated obelisk, modern fountain and square that bear his name, and of the modern city around it. He was a neo-classical sculptor, famed in Rome, who returned to the cultured court of Gustav III. Sergel sculpted many statues for Gustav, including one
